Nocturnal
A one minute short film showcasing the sights, sounds, and people that characterizes Singapore's nightlife.
Long before Kim Gordon was a cooler-than-thou multimedia artist in Body/Head, she was a cooler-than-thou multimedia artist in Sonic Youth. In the ’80s, Gordon and her bandmates were fixtures of New York’s downtown art and music scene; one regular haunt of theirs was legendary nightclub Danceteria, which served as the setting for a short film Gordon made sometime around 1985. Now, as Dangerous Minds points out, said video has surfaced online thanks to filmmaker/designer Chris Habib (a.k.a. Visitor Design). “Excellent video I found in my Sonic Youth archive,” Habib writes on the clip’s Vimeo page. “I digitized it for Kim during her [early 2000s] CLUB IN THE SHADOWS exhibition at Kenny Schachter’s old space in the West Village.”

A solo audiovisual performance. Eighth entry into deeply beguiling series of works responding to the Alps acted as the closing night event of Alchemy Film Festival. The images are studies of the Alps degraded and distorted live at the front of the auditorium; the picture pixelated, streams of colour engulfed the screen like a crashed desktop, and as hawks hovered over the mountains they left staggered trails of glitches across the screen like computerised vapour trails. The audio was also created live using short atonal precomposed tracks. The aim was to create a digital alchemy, an abstracted journey into the mountains, a wild wonder inside and out.

The film explores a young man's intimate relationship with the Internet. While the absence of a father figure has left him searching for answers, he finds an unexpected mentor in Google. From learning everyday tasks like shaving to discovering deeper knowledge, the algorithm becomes much more than a simple search engine, blurring the boundaries between real and virtual.

While trying to use a random video processing app I programed for a series of shorts based on old basque footage, the program got buggy and produced very glitchy and broken images. I thought this preliminar test (atariko proba) gone wrong deserved to be a short on its own, so here it is. This has been made from footage of these movies, several of them digitized and shared by Euskadiko Filmategia: Biarritz : la plage et la mer (Félix Mesguich, 1899) , Irun (1912), Eusko-ikusgaiak (Manuel Intxausti, 1923), El día de Guipúzcoa (Agustín Macasoli, 1924), Los apuros de Octavio (Hermanos Azcona, 1926), Fiestas de Plencia (Leon Armando Zalvidea, 1927), San Fermín (1928), El mayorazgo de Basterretxe (Hermanos Azcona, 1929). Song is: Camille Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto no. 3 in B minor, Op. 61 as preserved by European Archive for musopen.org

"This project consists a visual fluidity of construction, harmony and thoughts taking colors and length from this body of autonomy. Different images between figuration and abstraction are created by meaning and phenomenon letting the decoupage revealing a piece of a strange underworld. I built it like a window opened to the fresh air of improvisation by familiar landscapes, those exact moments articulating a connection between light and movement."

A set of 500*500 pixel boxes analyzes a group of image data produced on a train—a train running between Korea and Kazakhstan. Mostly, the detection process appears to be random. However, despite the incoherency, the boxes can generate an output, a story that can make sense.

Be. Belonging. Words on vintage flash cards shuffle past in a stream-of-consciousness that shows the mind working, assigning labels and names to things through love and language. In the space of a moment, perception embarks on an epic journey of tongues, through Cantonese and English sounds and Ektachrome memories that form the characters and identity of this American-born Asian filmmaker.

This work is an attempt to overcome alienation amidst the fragmented construction reality of everyday narrative. Rethinking the meaning of reflections and shadows, framed subjects, body movements, screen, as well as sounds that are constructed by connecting the expression of their existence with the history of representation in modern art.

In what could be considered a follow up to Al Qasimi’s 2020 work Mother of Fire, she once again invokes the figure of the jinn (spirits in Islamic mythology) to explore the ghosts of British imperialism in the UAE. As its spectre lingers on the horizon, two teenage girls seek to liberate a pirate damned to spend purgatory on a site now being developed into a hotel. Originally commissioned for Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present, Al Qasimi entangles historical narratives with contemporary notions of piracy. In examining how it has been historically and culturally represented, new perspectives of old mythographies come into focus. (Myriam Mouflih)
