A stroll of three ill-formed characters (freaks) in a fantasy and surreal world. Short film of animation from end of studies (promotion 2014).

In this surreal odyssey, a young boy walks through a series of doors opening up visions of the past and future. “Mi,” made by Masayoshi Nakamura and Zak Engel, is beautifully animated, vibrating with color, shape and possibility. Emerging from abstract geometric landscapes, we lock in on a boy with his father embracing in the middle of a rainy forest. Soon they are descending to the bottom of a lake to discover a hidden city. There, the boy enters a door and finds himself walking through his father’s memories, or maybe it’s his own future, or somehow both.

Subjects included the fur of a cat, hair of a girl, a cutting board, and a ball of cat fur that was burned with an incense stick. Unfortunately, during the final shot the flame melted part of the microscope lens.

Two young soldiers, bound to the beauty of the landscape, guide us to the stories of sadness of those forced to leave and the inherent desire to resist by inhabiting the islands. The filmic wandering becomes a nostalgic and political reflection on territorial belonging and identity, and the roles we assume in the places we came from.
