The Dark Horse
One-time Maori speed-chess champ, Genesis Potini, lives with a bi-polar disorder and must overcome prejudice and violence in the battle to save his struggling chess club, his family and ultimately, himself.
A documentary about Auckland
Auckland / Tāmaki Makaurau is New Zealand's largest city and the main commercial hub of the country. Auckland has always been regarded as "different"; it has always been a contested place, a crossroads. In 2009, just before Auckland was to become the Super City, we asked some of the city's best informed and outspoken residents to help us tell the story of the place. The result is a rich and at times contradictory composite of views which yet add up to something deeply informative and memorable.

Actor Rawiri Paratene was 16 years old when he joined Māori activist group Ngā Tamatoa (Young Warriors) in the early 1970s. "Those years helped shape the rest of my life," says Paratene in this 2012 Māori TV documentary, directed by Kim Webby. The programme is richly woven with news archive from the 1970s, showing protests about land rights and the Treaty of Waitangi, and a campaign for te reo to be taught in schools. Several ex Ngā Tamatoa members — including Hone Harawira, Tame Iti and Larry Parr— are interviewed by Paratene, who also presents the documentary.
At the age of nine, Bruce McLaren was diagnosed with Perthes disease, a rare childhood bone disorder that affected his left hip and forced him to spend more than two years in hospital with his leg immobilized in a traction device. Rather than stopping him in his tracks, this challenge ignited a passion for mechanics and racing cars, fueled in part by his father, who ran a service station in Auckland. McLaren’s full journey is explored, starting from local races in New Zealand, to his early triumph in Formula 1, when he became the youngest Grand Prix winner at age 22; to the founding of Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd in 1963, and his untimely death in 1970 during a test run of the M8D at the Goodwood Circuit.
