Backcountry Responsibility
In the heart of the 2022/23 winter season, one of the biggest snow seasons on record, Teton County, Wyoming experienced five backcountry rescues in five days. Why? Lack of knowledge? Heuristic traps? Social media creating false confidence? Sheer bad luck?
The recent heavy workload faced by Teton County Search and Rescue crews last winter highlights the fact that some recreational users of the Bridger Teton National Forest are in critical need of more and better information regarding best practices and safe conduct on National Forest lands. Many of these incidents could potentially be avoided with proper planning and critical thinking in the backcountry. In partnership with Friends of Bridger-Teton, TGR presents Backcountry Responsibly, a digital film targeted at the growing number of winter backcountry users whose impact on the surrounding public lands has increased dramatically in recent years. Think Thank's most mind numbing, heart stopping freestyle snowboard video ever! Brain Dead Heart Attack marked a decade of snowboard videos for Think Thank, which was always one of the goals when it started. The concept was that the Brain Dead side would feature the dudes who have been around awhile at least in Think Thank videos, some of whom were quite literally brain dead. Heart Attack side would be the launch pad precursor for the new faces who would go on to film for Think Thank Almanac. We were moving out of the brain and into the heart; the heart of a new era of Think Thank, a crew of friends snowboarding together and filming each other, much like how it started 10 years ago.

Hospital staff are reporting more violence and anti-social behaviour than ever before. In 2015, 8 staff were assaulted every hour – a new record high. At The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham – one of the UK’s biggest hospitals – they think they have the answer. Here a private security force of 46 uniformed guards, and a sophisticated CCTV system, keep staff and patients safe. A colourful mixture of characters ranging from ex-soldiers, to bouncers, to former elite sportsmen, it’s the security team’s job to keep the hospital running smoothly. With more than 2 million visitors they have to deal with all aspects of crime and anti-social behaviour. All against a back drop of life changing and life saving procedures.

This area with its hilly terrain became a legendary place for freestyle snowboarding. 20 years later, Mat Schaer and David Vladyka still come back from time to time to film, but the immaculate slopes are becoming rare. This descent is an opportunity to focus on the remarkable elements of the terrain: the cable car and its work still in progress, the surrounding peaks (Capucin, Mont Maudit, Mont Blanc). The two skiers stop regularly, here to observe climbers scaling the south face of the Aiguille, there to visit the Cosmiques Laboratory. They even take the time to rescue a skier stuck in a crevasse at the Séracs du Géant, before continuing their descent in style onto the Mer de Glace.

Most of the movie was shot in Alaska.
