Peter Schermann is angry at the world after his children move him into a nursing home. Still physically and mentally strong, he searches for a meaning to his life in a new and uncompromising world.
The action takes place in France in 1942. The Nazis herded people of different social classes and nationalities into a pre-trial detention cell, facing imminent death. One of them, Prince von Berg, receives the right to freedom. He renounces this right in the name of saving another person.
