The Dutch violinist and the Johann Strauss Orchestra perform a number of musical hits. André Rieu is one of the bestselling modern classical artists, with over 20 million sales worldwide and a string of successful tours behind him. Rieu set up the Johann Strauss Orchestra in 1987 with the dual aim of promoting the waltz music he loves while introducing a wider audience to the pleasures of classical music. Here Rieu and his orchestra turn their attention to memorable songs from stage musicals, providing their own take on a number of popular tunes.

Sir Simon Rattle, the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Rundfunkchor Berlin give an impeccable performance of the powerful biblical oratorio “The Gospel According to the Other Mary” by John Adams, one of the most renowned contemporary composers. The sophisticated score with a libretto by acclaimed theatre director Peter Sellars comes to life thanks to the Berliner Philharmoniker, whose intimate knowledge of Adams’s music stems from the composer himself: He attended the orchestra’s rehearsals. In the role of the Evangelist, Bubeck, Cummings and Medley lead through the narrative. A stunning highlight is Lazarus’s aria, sung by tenor Peter Hoare. But at the heart of the piece are Mary Magdalene and her sister Martha during the last days before Jesus’s death, impressively performed by mezzo-sopranos Kelley O’Connor and Tamara Mumford.

Highlights include excerpts of Bernstein conducting masterworks by Beethoven and Mahler, as well as of the maestro with the New York Philharmonic in Moscow in 1959 before an audience which included composer Dmitri Shostakovich and the dissident poet Boris Pasternak. It also contains never-before-seen footage, such as outtakes from televised concerts and interviews. Among these special treats: the dashing 28-year-old maestro representing the U.S. at the 1947 Prague Spring Festival – possibly the earliest extant film of Leonard Bernstein.

The centerpiece of the more than 100-minute documentary is the acclaimed concert at the Vienna Konzerthaus, where Jonas Kaufmann, accompanied by the Prague Philharmonic under the direction of Jochen Rieder, sang world-famous melodies from Viennese operettas and famous Viennese songs. Recorded at the historical Synchron Stage in Vienna, experience the thrills and swells of the Synchron Stage Orchestra - 48 string, 17 woodwind, 14 brass, 4 percussion - comprised of Austria’s finest instrumentalists, alongside a choir of 39 sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses. Composed between 1822 and 1824 in Vienna, Symphony No. 9 in D Minor was Beethoven’s final completed symphony. The Vrijthof concerts have been going for ten years and this anniversary was all the excuse André Rieu needed to make things extra festive and put on a fantastic, unforgettable anniversary concert with his new DVD, ‘Love In Venice’ – a selection of favourites from the concert. For this tenth concert series he had the Vrijthof square specially decorated in Venetian style, complete with a Doge’s Palace, Rialto Bridge, a fabulous Italian fountain and a colourful Venetian masquerade and it was a party from start to end. Love In Venice is an evening full of wonderful Italian music, world hits like Funiculi funicula, Tiritomba and Vieni sul mar and fabulous operatic arias. For the occasion of this anniversary, the Italian singer Rocco Granata came to sing his world hit Marina. Thanks to the perfect sound and image recordings on this DVD you can enjoy it at home just as though you were there yourself.
