A fatal accident changes the destiny of two families when Elizabeth Lancaster's wish comes true and she receives the heart transplant she desperately needs. When the husband of the woman whose heart now beats in Elizabeth?s body, pays her a visit the two fall in love. Meanwhile, the Taylors are an African-American family living in the deep South. When Willie Taylor, a minister and civil rights organizer, is shot to death, his son Emmet moves to the city and eventually joins the Black Panthers, serving as a bodyguard for Fred Hampton.
