Dr. Hugh Annersley, on the trail for a cure for cancer, is framed for murder by Dr. Appledan, who had accidentally killed a patient. Hugh’s sister Julia pleads with the fatally ill and suicidal Frank Sargeant to take the blame which he does only to discover that the insane Dr. Appledan had lied to him as well and he is healthy. As his execution looms Julia races to exonerate him.

Following the wedding, Kate is subjected to Frank's verbal abuse and seeks solace with Jack. Their friendship enrages Frank, who tortures them with his accusations. During a dinner party, Frank accuses Jack and Kate of being lovers in front of the male guests. Jack is restrained from accosting his father, but Frank suffers a fatal heart attack. Later, Jack and Kate fall in love and are married.

Twenty years later, Roy comes back to live with Tim, and is appalled at his unscrupulous methods of conducting business. Then, he falls in love with Enid Winslow, the daughter of a social reformer who is running for office against Tim. Largely due to Roy's financial support, Winslow wins the election, but, holding a grudge against Tim and anyone connected to him, he refuses to let Enid marry Roy.
