Prerna is the only daughter of the local school's headmaster. She gets to meet her childhood friend, Kumar, who is now one of the teachers at the same school. Prerna is attracted to Kumar, and admires his courage and determination to stand-up against the local and cruel zamindar, who had severely beaten-up Kumar's father several years ago. Soon both get married. Kumar is ambitious, and wants to become the head of this town. He organizes his campaign and successfully gets himself elected, not without creating some enemies. After this election, Kumar keeps busy with his new-found duties, but Prerna notices a change in him - as he is fast becoming the man he hated the most - the former zamindar.

The amendment in the law, making it compulsory for one-third of the Gram Panchayat representatives to be women, is not received favourably by the ruling Sarpanch of the village, Thakur Ratan Singh. Although he puts up a front of being in favour of the idea, along with his son Inder Singh, he conspires to field wives of friends, whom he hopes he can control through their husbands and through the caste network. Vidya, wife of Bhanwar Singh who is indebted to the Thakur, is one of the newly elected women Panchayat members. Vidya, who is educated, notices that the political empowerment of women is only on paper and in reality decision-making still continues to be with the manipulative old guard. Vidya decides it is time for a change.

After Sunder is unable to drive due to an injury, he recommends Babalu, and Aditya hires him. Babalu settles down in his new job, attempts to get accepted by everyone, including Chhoti Rani, who he finds attractive. He soon finds out that she, too, has feelings for him, and then starts making plans of not only carrying out his assigned task but also becoming the next Saheb.

The couple then travel to Kashmir for their honey-moon, and then settle down to a harmonious relationship. Hoping to travel even more, their plans are interrupted by the hospital's head doctor, who wants Ravi to focus on cancer research. The couple drop all travel plans and immerse themselves in research so much so that Shanti herself becomes ill.
